Lecture: “Navigating the Maze: Neuroscience and Fiber
Connections” at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Brown Auditorium

Time: Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 2:00 pm
Location: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Brown Auditorium
1001 Bissonnet Street, Houston, TX (Map)

Internationally known for her contribution to the modern fiber-art movement, artist Lia Cook incorporates concepts of cloth, touch, and memory into her large-scale weavings. She recently completed an artist residency in TREND (Transdisciplinary Research in Emotion, Neuroscience and Development) at the University of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine. During that time, she collaborated with scientists to explore and map how the human brain responds to viewing her woven works, which are based on photographs. Some of her current works use images of the neural connections in the white matter of her own brain, called fiber tracts, combined with snapshots of herself as a child. Cook will speak about her long-term interest in neuroscience and how experiments in perception and emotional inquiry have informed her current body of work.

A resident of Berkeley, California, Cook has been a Professor of Art at the California College of the Arts since 1976. She has exhibited widely across the United States, as well as in Australia, China, France and Ireland, among other countries. Her work can be found in many permanent collections, including that of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Racine Art Museum; and the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Lia Cook’s current exhibit of work, Bridge 11: Lia Cook, is on view at HCCC through May 13, 2012.

NIRS Brain Experiments & Lia Cook Gallery Talk

    Near Infrared Spectroscopy
    Brain Experiments

    In the Large Gallery
    March 14 – 16, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is pleased to participate in Brain Awareness Week by teaming up with Dr. Luca Pollonini, Research Assistant Professor at the University of Houston, College of Technology, to conduct an experiment bridging science and art. Stop by the large gallery at HCCC to see Bridge 11: Lia Cook and take part in a facial recognition experiment to find out how your brain interprets complicated visual stimuli.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) is an imaging technique designed to measure blood flow to the brain. Dr. Pollonini has created a wireless NIRS machine that hooks to the forehead and takes brain-flow readings while visitors look at Lia Cook’s weavings. Researchers will then look for different indicators, such as when the brain recognizes an image as a face versus an indiscriminate array of pixels.

    Gallery Conversation with Lia Cook,
    Luca Pollonini & Tim Ellmore

    In the Large Gallery
    Wednesday, March 14, 6:00 PM

Join fiber artist, Lia Cook; Dr. Luca Pollonini, Research Assistant Professor at UH; and Dr. Tim Ellmore, Assistant Professor at The Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery, for an informal conversation about how these fascinating brain experiments work and how they inform Cook’s body of work.

    Twelve Voices from One
2010 Art Cloth Mastery Program Exhibition
Students of Jane Dunnewold’s Art Cloth Mastery Program will exhibit at San Antonio’s Radius Gallery from March 29 through May 31, 2012.  Open to the public, a reception will be on Thursday, March 29, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.
Based in San Antonio, Jane Dunnewold is a world renowned, award winning mixed media artist. An author of books and DVD’s related to the subject of art cloth, Dunnewold exhibits and conducts workshops domestically and internationally.
The twelve exhibiting students from around the world studied the elements of design, dyeing textiles, surface manipulation and mixed media applications as they honed their individual styles. Five week long studio sessions are supplemented with rigorous interim assignments during the two-and-a-half-year endeavor. The exhibition is the culmination of the participants’ efforts.
Designed and implemented by instructor/artist Jane Dunnewold, the Art Cloth Mastery Program is unique in its ability to provide advanced education in contemporary surface design practices. The program is enrolled each year from a roster of applicants who must provide evidence of previous experience and serious intent, and is limited to twelve students per term.
Each participating artist will present a short lecture on the development of her work. Presentations will showcase a range of inspiration and technique. Sessions will be scheduled on Tuesday, March 27, and Wednesday, March 28, at a time to be announced. Free and open to the public.
The Radius is located at 106 Auditorium Circle in downtown San Antonio.  The gallery is open from 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday – Friday.
